Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics: Which Primary Provider Is Right for Me?

Choosing a primary care provider is a great step in a healthy direction. But Fairview offers three types of providers: family medicine, internal medicine, and pediatrics. Which one is right for you and your family? Let’s break each one down.

Family Medicine

Family medicine providers can see patients of any age. “Family medicine providers take care of you throughout your life, from birth to death,” explains Leah Masucci, Fairview Range’s Primary Care Manager. At Fairview, your provider can care for not just you, but your entire family.  “This gives the provider an even better understanding of your family history and health.”

Internal Medicine

Internal medicine providers treat patients age 18 and above. They typically have a more in-depth knowledge of adult diseases and illnesses. “We usually recommend internal medicine providers when your wellness requires more complex medicine or if you have multiple chronic conditions,” states Masucci.

Pediatrics

A pediatrician provides healthcare for those 0 to 18. Both pediatricians and family medicine providers care for this age set, but a pediatrician specializes in the care of children and teens. “Some families prefer a pediatrician for their children and some prefer a family doc,” mentions Masucci, “Family docs are very knowledgeable but will consult with a pediatrician in some cases.”

Which One Is Best?

It depends on your health scenario. Family medicine is a great option for overall care for everyone in the family. Internal medicine is perfect if you are an adult dealing with a more complex medical situation. Pediatrics works well if you’re looking for a child-specialist provider. No matter which one suits you, everyone on our care team is an expert in amazing care.

Watch. Meet. Choose.

Maybe you’ve picked a discipline or maybe you’re still undecided. No matter your stage, you can get to know our providers without even visiting the clinic. Head to fairview.org/search/doctors. There, type in your area code or city and most of our providers will pop up. Each one will have a bio video to watch.

Now it’s time to meet with them. We call this an initial consult. It gives both you and the provider a chance to see if it’s the right fit. You can always have the option to see somebody else.
