Primary Care, Urgent Care, ED: How Are They Different?

When an illness or injury comes up, it can be hard to know where you should head. Is it serious enough for the emergency department? Or can your primary care provider help? No need to worry, we’ll help you answer those questions. Here is a breakdown of the levels of healthcare.

Primary Care

Primary care is long-term care for your long-term wellness. This is where you would go to meet with your regular provider to discuss your overall health, mental or physical. Its focus is preventative practices and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. This is the stage of care that is very dialed into your health history. You build a rapport with your provider, and typically see them yearly for as long as they are practicing. The goal is to see your primary care provider for any illness or injury as long as it’s not life threatening.

Urgent Care

Urgent care is for when visiting primary care is unavailable, but the ED isn’t necessary. You need to be seen today, but you’re not dying. If primary care is closed, head to the ED. There, a triage nurse will determine if you should go to the urgent care or the emergency department. You typically would be sent to the urgent care if you come into the ED with a broken bone, a sore throat, or minor burns.
