What Does an Orthopedic Surgeon Do?
Orthopedic surgeons are medical doctors who specialize in diagnosing, treating, and preventing disorders of the bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, and muscles. Their work encompasses a wide range of activities, from performing intricate surgeries to managing non-surgical treatments for musculoskeletal conditions. Here are some key aspects of what orthopedic surgeons do:
- Diagnosis and Treatment: They diagnose injuries and disorders related to the musculoskeletal system using physical exams, imaging studies like X-rays or MRIs, and other diagnostic tools. Treatment can range from medication and physical therapy to surgical interventions.
- Surgical Procedures: Orthopedic surgeons perform surgeries to correct issues such as broken bones, torn ligaments, joint problems, and other musculoskeletal injuries. Common procedures include joint replacement (like hips and knees), arthroscopic surgeries, and repairing fractures. ‘
- Sports Medicine: They often work with athletes to treat sports-related injuries, such as torn ligaments, dislocations, and other physical traumas. This includes both surgical and non-surgical methods to get athletes back to their peak performances.
- Trauma Care: Orthopedic surgeons are also skilled in trauma care, treating injuries resulting from accidents, falls, or other acute incidents. This can involve emergency surgeries to stabilize and repair severe fractures or dislocations.
- Rehabilitation and Prevention: They play a crucial role in helping patients regain strength and mobility post-surgery. Additionally, they provide guidance on injury prevention and maintaining musculoskeletal health.
Outside of the operating room, Dr. Lemker is an avid outdoorsman. He enjoys hunting and fishing, hobbies that align well with the beautiful natural surroundings of Northern Minnesota.
